CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Join us to support talented, enthusiastic students of all ages performing in small ensembles with professional musicians.

What Is Chamber Music?

Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments, with each performer playing a unique part.

A typical “piano trio”, which is the majority of the pieces performed by TMC students, consists of three performers, usually a violinist, a cellist, and a pianist playing together collaboratively. Here at Tacoma Music Collaborative, we offer the ability to perform trios and chamber music pieces of many kinds. We enlist a professional musician for each role of the typical trio format, and our students may perform on piano, violin, cello, or an alternate instrument as the composition allows.

Not sure performing chamber music is beneficial to your musicianship? Consider some of the reasons presented in this Strings Magazine article.

When and Where?

Dates and times for a fall 2024 festival will be announced on this page and on TMC’s email list.

Participation in a trio can help music students of all ages get their first taste of collaborative music in a wide-reaching musical community. Many music students do not play with small ensembles. It is our belief at TMC that participation in small ensembles like a trio can quickly grow important skills in communication, musicality, and confidence. Our participants have seen their skills grow. The experience is impactful for both students and their families:

PIANO TRIOS GUIDELINES

There are a few things to remember:

  1. Memorization is not required for chamber ensembles. However, memorization can enhance preparation.
  2. Students will be scheduled for two (2) required rehearsals. Teachers are expected to attend.
  3. Student have the option to sign up for additional rehearsal time or third rehearsal, with an extra fee. This option is especially recommended for students playing advanced pieces that may require more coordination with other musicians in the trio.
  4. If a student is not prepared for the performance (at minimum, able to play through the music in sync with the other musicians), they will be invited to perform the following year.
  5. Repeats are only to be used for very small sections or very short pieces. Repeats of Expositions, Development sections, etc., are not permitted.
  6. Students are expected to dress as professional performers: business casual to formal is appropriate. No strapless or low-cut tops or dresses, no short skirts or dresses above the knee, no denim, and no spandex or leggings when worn by themselves.
