Music Director

Orchestral Recital Series of Tacoma (ORS) is searching for an energetic and detail-oriented Music Director.  This is a part-time, contracted position.  Competitive stipend, commensurate with experience.

ORS of Tacoma presents three events annually: 

  • Fall Trio Festival offers students the opportunity to rehearse and perform piano trio repertoire in collaboration with two professional musicians in November
  • Winter Benefit Concert features ensembles comprised of local professional musicians in February
  • Spring Concerto Festival offers students the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a Chamber Orchestra in June


The successful candidate should possess excellent conducting skills, deep knowledge of the concerto repertoire, and be able to engage well with students of all levels, their teachers, professional musicians, staff, and board. The candidate will provide leadership and clearly communicate their vision for the organization. In addition, they will demonstrate strong creative intelligence, ability to work within budgetary constraints, and potential for building professional relationships with members of our community. The Music Director works with the Managing Director and reports to the Board.

The Music Director will coordinate and schedule all performances for the three events described above and will be responsible for the following:

  • Preparing and conducting the orchestra for the Spring Concerto Festival
  • Leading and supervising rehearsals and performances
  • Managing the online student registration process and determining student fees
  • Managing the approved repertoire list and assuring compliance with federal, state, and local copyright and licensing requirements
  • Preparing budgets, monitoring expenses, and overseeing staff
  • Coordinating communication with performance venues
  • Communicating with the ORS of Tacoma community of teachers to facilitate student participation in our programs
  • Managing ORS Music Library
  • Being an avid advocate for the organization with its various constituents
  • Actively fundraising
  • Building existing ORS programs and consistently upholding high professional standards


Required qualifications and experience:

  • Excellent conducting skills and experience
  • Experience with concert programming and hosting music events
  • Ability to effectively hire, train and lead musicians
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the piano trio and concerto repertoire, including works by educational composers and under-represented composers
  • Active interest in expanding available repertoire either through commission or research to include more works by under-represented composers
  • Effective skills as a music educator, working with participants of all ages and backgrounds
  • Strong administrative skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive and its associated applications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experienced collaborative leader
  • Experience with the issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the performing arts
